IMPACT PARTNER HIGHLIGHTS

Wisdom of the Elders is one of many community partners coming together with Portland Parks and Recreation to celebrate the 75 years of one of our city’s prized outdoor spaces, Forest Park! On Saturday, Sept. 23, join them and other community members to volunteer, learn, and celebrate together at this event, which kicks off at 8:30 a.m.! Wisdom of the Elders is offering a basket weaving workshop at the Lower Macleay trailhead from 9:30-11:30 a.m., led by Celeste Whitewolf, Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation elder; and Lise Gervais, a basket weaving instructor. More information on the event and the workshop can be found on this website – including a registration link for the workshop. You can also register for the workshop directly here

We’re digging back into the archives of KSMoCA’s work to highlight a fun way for folks of all ages to engage in an art moment together! If you haven’t already, check out KSMoCA’s Conceptual Art at Home project – a series of art prompts designed for K-8th grade students, but open for anyone to do! Prompts are written by artists who have worked with KSMoCA, and some of the organization’s broader community of friends. Make a drawing with one of their prompts, connect with a family member through a thoughtful interview, or learn about the work of an artist you didn’t know before!

Impact Partner Highlights

Black Food Sovereignty Coalition

Earlier this summer, The Oregonian highlighted the work that the Black Food Sovereignty Coalition is doing in the community in this great write-up on the Black Futures Farm and other programs – including a collaboration with another Impact Partner, WomenFirst Transition & Referral Center! BFSC is bringing them fresh produce to support their programming.

WomenFirst Transition and Referral Center

WomenFirst Transition & Referral Center is hiring for a number of FT and PT positions, including a Financial Manager, Family Resource Navigator, Administrative Assistant, Childcare Coordinator, and Domestic Violence Advocate. Rosemary Anderson High School

Rosemary Anderson High School just launched its Prep program for the upcoming school year! This tuition-free pilot program for an initial enrollment of 60 students builds upon the alternative, community-based model at RAHS, adding increased post-secondary prep schooling through advanced classes, an entrepreneurship program with local business partners, and an athletics program that includes boys' basketball and girls' volleyball. You can read more about the program here in an article from The Skanner!

Constructing Hope

Constructing Hope has launched a project called “Building Legacy: Construction Industry Community Builders of Color,” documenting the historical contribution of BIPOC Pioneers in Oregon’s construction industry through storytelling. The site links to the biographies of these honorees, including Marcela Alcantar, Faye Burch, Shirley Minor, and James Posey. You can also find a set of moving interviews with these trailblazing community members on Constructing Hope’s YouTube page. They are also hiring right now for a part-time Fundraising Manager.

Since 1992, the Dorothy A. Johnson Center for Philanthropy has been a leader in helping to understand, strengthen, and advance effective philanthropy for strong, equitable, and inclusive communities. They just recently issued their 2023 report titled 11 Trends in Philanthropy. You can read it, watch a webinar about it, or catch some highlights by clicking this link.

WE’RE FAMOUS! :-)

We don’t just collectively give and learn. We also collectively recruit by each sharing about ninety-nine girlfriends in our own way. A Wonderful Time was had by All

It was such a gift to be able to gather together to celebrate our Impact Partners and our 2022 work. The music was lively, the food was yummy, and the opportunity to be together in real life was wonderful. Here is the link to the photos from the event for your enjoyment.  The password is Greatroom.

The Girlfriends will Test a Hybrid Model at the Awards Celebration

In the interest of inclusion and taking what we’ve learned in the pandemic and carrying that forward, while honoring the wonderful live event experiences we enjoy sharing, we will be testing the hybrid event model at our Awards Celebration on Tuesday, December 13. The event will be in-person and we encourage you to register and join us for a wonderful evening of celebration of our new Impact Partners and the work we’ve done over the past year, while we welcome new friends and colleagues who want to learn more about ninety-nine girlfriends by attending this event. If it doesn’t work for you to attend in person, please register for the virtual event and you can log onto zoom and watch the event from home. The virtual option will be free and the in-person option will offer a sliding scale that will help us recoup a small portion of the cost of the event. Be sure to register for the option that works best for you HERE.

Register for Meet the Finalists!

Did you know that one of the best ways to support our finalists is to show up at the virtual Meet the Finalists event? It’s true. They feel the love - even through the screen and the chat - just ask last year’s finalists. Also, this event and our awesome Voter’s Guide will greatly inform you when it comes time to cast your ballot for this year’s Impact Award Winners!

Inclusive and Inspiring, Awards Celebration Welcomes Guests

The Awards Celebration is coming up in mid-December and it’s a very exciting time for our community! This is a great opportunity for you to introduce friends/family/colleagues to our collective giving circle and invite them to join us for the evening and on this collective-giving adventure. The event is fun and festive as we welcome our Impact Partners to the ninety-nine girlfriends family, celebrate our year, and open up membership for 2023.

Who can you include in the fun? You can invite more than one guest! Start thinking about who you might invite while a task force cooks up their magic to make this a fun and inviting evening for all.

Community Counts - Build It With Your Girlfriends!

Many, many Girlfriends, and maybe you are one of them, have been working hard all year to plan and pull off events, to learn about grantmaking and review applications while looking for organizations that align with our values and funding priority, and to connect Girlfriends with opportunities to be informed, volunteer and engage.

Oregon Women's Investment Network Political Action Committee (WINPAC)

We were asked recently by a board member of Oregon WINPAC to share with you the work they are doing and we were happy to do so because it dovetails nicely with our learning question about the impact of systems change and advocacy on racial equity.

Grant Review Team Results Are In!

Some exciting news as summer moves into fall! The 2022 Grants Steering Committee and Grant Review Teams (“GRTs”) are delighted to announce that 20 semifinalists have been chosen from among the 131 grant applications that ninety-nine girlfriends received in June. Our GRTs have worked really hard to advance organizations that inspire them and align with our 2022 Funding Priority and Guiding Principles.

Share the Excitement By Hosting a Meet the Finalists Watch Party

Would you (and one or two other Girlfriends) like to host a Meet the Finalists watch party at your home or office? You get to decide the details (how many people, food, drinks, whatever you like). We are exploring ways for Girlfriends to connect in person while attending this virtual event and we would love to have your help! Please let us know if we can count on you to party.

Intersectionality Works: Building Feminist Analysis for All

From the PSU Center for Women’s Leadership

Wednesdays 10:00 am-12:00 pm Pacific Time from October 12 through November 9.

The many crises that Oregonians face today—soaring rents, unaffordable childcare, the rollback of rights—require bold leadership. Different leadership. We believe this moment calls for intersectional feminist leadership.

Activities Are Ramping Up!

Watch your email inbox because we’re getting to a really exciting and educational part of our year. In October, your Member Education Committee will offer several small-group discussion opportunities to learn about gender, systemic racism, and how to have an inclusive conversation.

Next we we move on to Meet the Finalists (a signature event where you learn about this year’s finalists for Impact Awards), voting for Impact Awards, and our signature Awards Celebration. It’ll be a few months of wonderfully engaging activities and opportunities to learn and connect before our winter break (January-February).

Pronoun Project Begins

At our recent event, we began a project we are calling the Pronoun Project. Through this we are asking our members to add their pronouns to their name tags so other Girlfriends know by which pronouns they would like to be referred. This is part of our ongoing effort to be inclusive and to help every single Girlfriend feel a sense of belonging in our community. Read more about the importance of pronouns here and look for the labels at your next in-person event so you can update your name tag too. Your Member Education Committee will be presenting a program on understanding gender that we hope will be of interest to you. Watch for more about that in the fall.

Share Your Matching Funds

Do you have access to matching funds? We’d love to help you access those to amplify our work. We’ve been able to do great things in the past as a result of the generosity of our members and their matching funds. We’ve increased our grant pool, used them for the Fellows, tried out a scholarship program, and more. We guarantee if you share your matching funds with ninety-nine girlfriends they will be used with wisdom and discretion. Let us know if you’d like to learn more or if we can help you access matching funds.
