Member Education Committee Overview
The Member Education Committee Co-Chairs create an annual calendar of educational programs and provide resources designed to help members become more informed and engaged philanthropists. They are supported by a logistics team within the committee who are responsible for implementing plans for programs and web content.
Member Education Committee Co-Chair
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Create a calendar of educational programs reflecting core concepts around an annual learning question
Organize and implement programs, including forums, online and in-person programs, and small-group events in members’ homes to advance the education mission
Engage members in sharing their expertise with other members about philanthropy, community and civic engagement
Participate on the Coordinating Council, attending monthly meetings to coordinate activities across the organization, problem-solve and maintain focus on mission and goals
Lead monthly Member Ed Committee meetings, recruit members for committee, and participate in other committees’ monthly meetings as necessary to ensure coordination
HELPFUL SKILLS INCLUDE
Ability to organize and support volunteers leading programs
Willingness to collaborate with other parts of the organization to align experiences for members
Understanding of diverse learning styles
Experience with adult education programs
Bonus, but not required: Understanding of and interest in the key education areas of philanthropy, community, and social change
GENERAL CALENDAR
Jan-Mar - Confirm annual learning question; brainstorm possible programs; organize and orient committee, update on current local/national trends re philanthropy, community, social change
April-June - Create programs to launch after May 1st, including signature Discovery Forum, recruit talent from membership to present programs
Oct-Dec - As needed, support leadership/succession planning programs managed by the Operations committee. This activity is focused on setting up committees and teams for the new year
SUPPORT/TRAINING
New co-chair will work with current co-chair for on-the-job training for the next year
Resources include Member Education Committee Charter, log of programs to date, step-by-step program worksheets, archives of programs to date, resources from Philanos (our collective giving circle network with lots of videos about programming), and former co-chairs, including Tammy, Deborah and Jayni
OTHER
We ask for a two-year commitment; a year to learn and a year to teach the next co-chair so that institutional knowledge is retained
Time commitment: approximately 5 hours/month minimum, seasonal
