Volunteer Spotlight

What brought you to ninety-nine girlfriends?

In the first or second year of ninety-nine girlfriends’ existence, my cousin-in-law, Jinx Faulkner, invited me to an educational event on philanthropy, and I was immediately intrigued by the group and all the great women I met there. I missed the window to join the next year, but was excited to do so in 2018.

I have been involved ever since, working on the member survey and co-authoring the Voters’ Guide each year, and helping out as a facilitator, Mindful Mingler, or just a general helper back in the “before days” when we actually had in-person gatherings. I have also enjoyed hosting small-group events and having the opportunity to meet other members over dinner or brunch.

Why do you volunteer?

Ninety-nine girlfriends only exists because of our members’ willingness to pitch in and make things happen, and I want to be part of the energy that makes our collective circle work and grow. A big part of my personal motivation to join ninety-nine girlfriends was a desire to meet other women who also want to make a positive difference in our beloved Portland, and volunteering has given me that opportunity. By working on the annual member survey, I’ve learned first-hand what other members care about and how they hope to see ninety-nine girlfriends evolve. Co-authoring the Voters’ Guide has given me insight into the grant review process and in-depth knowledge about the potential grantee organizations. And participating as a host or other volunteer for in-person member events has just plain been fun!

Anything else that you would like to share?

I said it earlier, but it bears repeating: one of the best benefits of volunteering with ninety-nine girlfriends is the opportunity to meet great women! I have made friends via the organization, and there are many other women I hope to get to know better in the future.
