Workshop: How to read nonprofit financial statements

Financial statements from a nonprofit tell a story, and provide roadmaps for decisions.  What do they mean? Cash flow statements? Income statements? Budgets? Audits? IRS 990's? Come to our interactive workshop on how to read nonprofit financial statements. Learn terms and tools for nonprofit financial reporting. We'll provide practice on looking for indicators of nonprofit health, and answer questions about the various reports that you may see as a donor or a  board member. Fun and hands-on. For beginners or those with some background in finance. This will be led by Erin Zollenkopf, Managing Partner at Susan Matlack Jones & Associates, a firm specializing in accounting for nonprofit organizations, and Deborah Edward, a former nonprofit Executive Director and trainer for board members on nonprofit finance. Feel free to bring a friend. Look for an evite in your email about a month in advance. No cost. Please bring your own lunch. No cost.

Discovery Forum: How does ninety-nine girlfriends fit into our community's philanthropic landscape?

Update: This event originally scheduled for June, will now be held October 12th.

Once a year we have a Discovery Forum to deepen our understanding of community and philanthropy. This year we are asking about what the giving community looks like in our four-county region. What are the leading foundations? Who are philanthropic change makers? How meaningful are our $100,000 grants in this context? How is women's collective giving changing communities across the country? Come learn, meet/make new friends and have lunch. Special thank you to our Member Education Committee for presenting this event. Cost: $16/pp (covers facilities costs and a box lunch for you.) Look for an eventbrite link to  register.

Workshop: Understanding Implicit Bias

"Implicit Bias" refers to the attitudes and stereotypes that affect our actions and decisions in an unconscious manner. How do these biases prevent us from reaching out to others? Could they affect our grant-making decisions? This thought-provoking workshop was attended by a sold-out crowd.

Barbara J. Diamond, a civil rights attorney and producer of curriculum on implicit bias, led the workshop with colleague Marina Moro. Real-life experiences filmed in Portland provided grist for discussions for becoming aware of our biases. Click here to see the handouts from this event.

Thanks to our Member Education Committee for responding to our members and locating a tremendous leader for this project. Special thanks also to our members who have provided sponsorship dollars to help defray costs and make this workshop affordable.

Other information about implicit bias can be found on Barbara's website.
